5 Tips To De-stress During The Holidays

by Shayna Mahoney

The holidays tend to create anxiety, overwhelm, exhaustion and mood swings. There are a few simple things you can do for your body and mind each day to stay balanced, calm and excited.

5-5-7 Breath

Breathing is such a simple thing we can do, yet forget when we’re rushing around. Take a minute and inhale through your nose for a count of 5, hold for a count of 5 and exhale out of your mouth for a count of 7.

Try to do this a few times throughout your day. It will relax your nervous system, help you digest better and improve your sleep. It’s also great to do when family begins to get on your nerves! Breathe before you speak…

Of course too much sugar and caffeine can make us more anxious but let’s talk about what to have rather than what to avoid. Eating warm and grounding meals will keep you relaxed and your blood sugar and moods balanced.

Try starting your day with homemade oatmeal, then cooked grains and greens for lunch, a snack of nuts and seeds, dinner incorporating sweet potatoes and dessert of baked cinnamon apples and pears with herbal tea.

Incorporating spices throughout the day also helps such as ginger, cinnamon, turmeric and cumin. They also have extra health benefits.

One of my favorite supplements all year long is b-complex but it’s especially beneficial during the holidays (and colder weather). B-complex vitamins help to boost energy and improve mood, which are needed when we want to de-stress. I highly recommend Shaklee B-complex

Essential oils are another great way to keep calm and re-focus during stressful times. Lavender is one of my favorites. I highly recommend DoTerra’s lavender oil and diffusing it through your home, especially at bedtime so you can get a good night’s sleep.
